Penland, Summer 2011, with artist Barbara Cooper

This summer I attended a workshop at The Penland School of Arts Crafts in North Carolina titled "The Nature of Abstraction" taught by Barbara Cooper.

This was a very challenging class, yet, it truly opened my eyes to viewing the microscopic and macroscopic world around me in a whole new way. Our agenda was to look to nature for inspiration in the smallest elements we could find. We spent many hours looking through magnifying glasses and rendering what we viewed on a very large scale. The sheets of paper we worked on averaged around 30 x 40". There was something so liberating about taking something so tiny that the naked eye cannot fully decipher and blowing it up to a level where the viewer is forced to take it into consideration.
